Responsible Gaming

Sisal operates in the gaming market as a Government Licensee, collaborating with the Italian Customs and Monopolies Agency (AAMS) and the Authorities to offer legal, safe and balanced gaming and entertainment experiences based on the principles of Responsible Gaming.

Our relationship with consumers is based on the values of trust, expertise, fairness and transparency. This has allowed us to develop a Safe and Responsible Gaming Programme - Gioca il Giusto (Play Right) - which is aligned with AAMS directives, in order to establish a model of aware and balanced gaming based on entertainment, the prohibition of gaming for minors and the prevention of problem gaming.

Consumer protection involves all stages of gaming, from game design to marketing and promotion. Furthermore, when a new product is marketed, Sisal ensures that point of sale operators and players receive training and assistance and that specific security measures are implemented.
Sisal is fully aware that gaming without checks and balances can, in certain cases, cause the most vulnerable players to develop a dependency and be the cause of personal and social problems. Hence the company’s commitment to raising its players’ awareness and to helping them adopt an informed and moderate approach to gaming.

“Gioca il Giusto”, which is aligned with the "European Responsible Gaming Standards" drawn up by European Lotteries, makes provision for for cross-company activities and specifically:
  • research and surveys to understand the social perception of gaming and the issue of problem gaming
  • mechanisms to assess and monitor the level of risk during game development
  • prevention (self-restraint and self-regulation) and monitoring mechanisms in distance gaming machines
  • responsible communication
  • distribution network information and engagement programme
  • personnel training
  • player education and sensitization
  • player assistance and support
These activities are monitored constantly by measuring and reporting on Responsible Gaming performance indicators.

Responsible Communication

In an ever more complex market occupied by an increasing number of players, there is the need to define constraints and limits to provide operators with support and guidelines in the development of effective advertising campaigns that achieve business goals but are also examples of responsible conduct.

As early as 2010, Sisal had already established its own specific Guidelines for the Development of Advertising Campaigns and is the promoter of the first industry-wide Advertising Self-Regulation Code within the scope of “Sistema Gioco Italia”, the Federation that represents the gaming and entertainment industry supply chain in the framework of the Innovative and Technological Services section of Confindustria (the Italian confederation of industry).

This initiative, which involved Italian Self-Regulation Bodies and leading industry operators, led to the development by Federazione Sistema Gioco Italia of the “Code and Principles of Self-Regulation for Communication Concerning Games with Cash Prizes”, approved in June 2012, and to the inclusion of Article 28c in the Advertising Self-Regulation Code by Istituto di Autodisciplina Pubblicitaria (IAP, the Italian Advertising Self-Regulation Institute), in force since September 2012.

Moreover, as of January 1, 2013, Legislative Decree n. 158, dated September 13, 2012 (the “Balduzzi Decree”), contains a number of new provisions on gaming.

Therefore, in compliance with these regulations, Sisal has reviewed its own guidelines and business policy, stating that any communication campaign by any business area and department must comply with the new provisions, and has drafted specific materials to ensure their enforcement.

Protection of Minors

One of the priority goals of Sisal’s Responsible Gaming program is the protection of minors, an issue that the company tackles on multiple levels:
1.   Article 4.10 of the Sisal Code of Ethics establishes that: “Although gaming may offer positive emotions, Sisal does not allow people under 18 to play. This is to avoid the risk that, in their search for new emotions, minors might indulge in unhealthy gaming behaviours and habits.”
Sisal requires the same commitment from point of sale operators, who must comply with the Code of Ethics:
“To this end, the company has instructed the sales network not to accept any gaming requests from young people under 18 years of age. In the event of any doubt as to the age of a customer, staff must ask for an ID document.”

With regard to distance gaming: “Sisal has also set up check tools to stop minors from playing online.”

2. The Sisal Sanction System (Organisational Model in accordance with Legislative Decree 231/01) states in Article 5:
“The company shall apply to its employees, consultants and partners in general, for any breach of the Code of Ethics, the provisions set out from time to time in the relevant contracts in force between the parties, consisting of the termination of the contract for non-fulfillment and of sanctions in specific cases, unless greater damages are payable.”

Furthermore, the Regulator “shall be entitled to carry out any investigations and verifications deemed appropriate based on the reporting of a potential breach of the Code of Ethics or any orders from the Judicial Authorities. Employees, consultants and partners must collaborate fully and transparently with the Regulator and provide any information requested."

3. The Contract for a physical point of sale for National Lotteries (GNTN) states that the Betting Agent (article 21) has the specific obligation to comply with the Code of Ethics:
“The Betting Agent acknowledges the Code of Ethics implemented by Sisal. Compliance with said Code is an essential part of the obligations undertaken by signing this contract. Therefore any breach of the Code of Ethics may result, in the most serious cases, in the termination of this contract, as well as payment of any damages suffered by Sisal.”

4. The 18+ logo and the wording “Minors are prohibited from engaging in gaming activities, which may cause addiction” must be displayed on all Sisal gaming instruments and point of sale display materials. Awareness raising material is distributed throughout the Sisal network.
In all areas devoted exclusively to gaming, stickers prohibiting entry and gaming for minors under 18 years of age must obligatorily be applied in a clearly visible position at all entrances to the establishment. In cases in which age is not immediately clear, the law makes provision for staff to ask to see an ID document.

5. In order to register for an online gaming account, Players must enter their age (which must be over 18 years). Moreover, the company’s policy of prohibiting minors from gaming also makes provision for a copy of an ID document stating the Player’s age to be sent to Sisal.

6. In order to ensure effective implementation of the principles set out in the Advertising Self-Regulation Code – issued by Istituto di Autodisciplina Pubblicitaria (IAP, the Italian Advertising Self-Regulation Institute) and adopted by Sisal – and to ensure a model of Responsible Gaming, Sisal has drawn up its own policy with regard to sales communication.

7. Sisal’s sales communication policy and internal guidelines have contributed to the definition of the Guidelines for the Gaming Sector adopted in 2012 by leading industry operators with regard both to advertising content and media positioning. Specifically, the Guidelines include Sisal’s commitment with regard to its own sales communication to avoid mentioning or referring, even indirectly, to people under 18 years of age, in order to remove any risk of use and abuse by minors.

The actions described above relating to the protection of minors have also been defined in accordance with the provisions of article 1, paragraph 70, of the “Stability Law” (no. 220 of December 13, 2010, published in the Official Journal, no. 297 dated December 1, 2010) and the provisions of the Balduzzi Decree (legislative decree no. 158/2012, converted to Law no. 189/2012).

Gioca il Giusto

Sisal knows how important it is to raise awareness about Responsible Gaming and, over the years, it has perfected the information it gives to players so that they are aware of the risks associated with excessive gaming behaviour. All gaming instruments and point of sale display materials, websites and consumer advertising include notices prohibiting minors from playing, warnings about the risks of addiction, and statements providing information about the probability of winning in the various categories.

These indications are in addition to the “Gioca il Giusto” message and 18+ logo, which have appeared in the company’s advertising for some years now.

With a view to raising the awareness of players about the importance of a balanced approach to gaming, Sisal has continued to publish the “Gioca il Giusto” section devoted to Responsible Gaming on its websites. Visitors to these pages can read the “10 Rules for the Responsible Player”, which were sent to all points of sale last year, the “Useful Advice for Responsible Gaming” page containing contact information for player support services, as well as the What Kind of Player Are You? self-assessment test, developed on a joint basis by Sisal and the Department of Neurosciences at Fatebenefratelli Hospital in Milan, which players can use on their own account to assess their approach to gaming. The test is also available from Sisal Wincity point of sale totems.

Sisal offers direct guidance to potentially problematic players and supports a specialist service to provide expert assistance to people who have exceeded their limits.

  • Sincere help - The Sisal Contact Center on 800.778.866, answered 24/7 by an operator or voice mail, is manned by staff who offer advice and first level assistance and who are periodically trained and updated on Responsible Gaming-related issues. The same service is also available via email by sending a message to giocailgiusto@sisal.it, which is monitored by members of the CSR
  • Responsible gaming - This nationwide service offered by FeDerSerD (the Federation of professionals working in the field of addictions) is managed by a team of professionals (psychologists, psychotherapists, psychiatrists and lawyers) and can be reached by land line and mobile telephone on 800921121, from Monday to Saturday, 9am to 10pm, and 24/7 on the www.giocaresponsabile.it web portal.
The main goals of the service are to promote an awareness of risk factors and the tools to avoid them, to provide a professional consulting and care service and support for players’ family and friends, and to refer players where necessary to national social, healthcare and assistance services. All these services are available free of charge and cases are handled anonymously, as is therapy provided through the website and by weekly telephone conversations with a therapist.

The Community

Since 2009, Sisal has developed a Community Action Plan to support and implement initiatives that create training and socialisation opportunities for young people, with particular attention to support for talented young adults. The actions undertaken to benefit the community include a number of initiatives that respond to social needs through the active involvement of the distribution network.
The strategic areas of the Community Action Plan in which the company has invested are:

  • Education and talents: new contexts, opportunities and talent development training.
  • Art and culture: projects, events, art and culture, offering opportunities for relational growth and positive social aggregation.
  • Sport: activities, projects and events that promote the positive values of sport.
  • Sisal fundraising network: fundraising through the involvement of the Sisal Network, in order to support scientific research projects and initiatives to tackle social emergencies.
  • Other community support initiatives: charitable initiatives and projects with partners active in the local area.

Education and Talents

ItaliaCamp Association

Since 2011, Sisal has been supporting ItaliaCamp, an Association with a mission to contribute actively to the development of a different participatory consciousness through a new model of engaging with people; to identify and support the training of new forms of individual and collective leadership which work to the advantage of Italy; and to promote ideas that provide support for the public, based on the principles of social, environmental and economic sustainability.

ItaliaCamp was established in 2009 as an Italian university think tank by twenty young graduates from the Luiss Guido Carli University in Rome, to provide an innovative exchange and engagement model for civil society, with the aim of promoting new technology and developing a number of specific tools, including BarCamp, a collaborative “non-conference” that elicits the active engagement of all participants. Today the Association is a network which brings together and establishes conversations between 70 Italian universities on one hand and Italian Institutions and businesses on the other.

Sisal has worked alongside ItaliaCamp on various initiatives, including the creation on December 21, 2011 of the Foundation of the same name, which was made possible by support from the Prime Minister’s Office and the participation of numerous Founding Members, including important Italian companies and institutions, one of them being Sisal.
With its “La tua idea per il Paese” (“Your idea for the country”) contest, the ItaliaCamp Association has received over 2,000 proposed ways to support Italy’s economic, social and civil growth, with the aim of promoting the realisation of projects that respond to the needs of local communities.

One of the winning ideas in the 2012 edition is the “Scuola d’Impresa” (‘Business School’) project, which Sisal has chosen to support.
The mission of the project, which was launched as a pilot in spring 2013 with the support of Luiss Guido Carli University in Rome, is to establish closer links between the world of the university and the world of work, offering undergraduates the possibility of writing multi-disciplinary dissertations on subjects that combine study and research with business needs.
So far as concerns the partnership with Sisal, the company has provided undergraduates with the possibility of working in the two sectors in which it is a leading player: gaming and payment services. Students were therefore asked to write dissertations on the launch of an innovative, sustainable gaming product, or to create and implement original ideas linked to the world of payment services. During project work, Sisal acts as coordinator for the corporate tutor who supervises the undergraduate either virtually or physically inside the company.

Color Your Life

In 2011, Sisal entered into a partnership with Color Your Life, a Foundation that helps young people express their talents by recognising their dreams and expectations, and makes a practical contribution to building their future.

The Foundation has two objectives: to create the conditions for young people to benefit from best-in-class training opportunities, by working with schools and the world of culture, art and the professions; and to promote culture and awareness in young people so that they develop a civic conscience and are good future citizens.

Every year, Color Your Life organises many different competitions for 13 to 18-year-olds. COLORbandi competition announcements propose macro-subjects around which each candidate can develop an original idea about achieving their dreams and asserting their talent. Young people participate by preparing a self-presentation and a project using their prefered technique (writing, audio, video, drawing or comic strips). A Scientific Committee made up of experts in the various sectors identifies the best projects and selects the young winners of the COLORCampus, an intensive training and development experience organised in Loano on the Italian Riviera.
During this completely free 14-day period, participants meet managers, artists, craftsmen, engineers and scientists, with whom they study and attend workshops. The experience also includes English language courses, leisure activities and sport.

But Color Your Life doesn’t only work with young people. The “Prof. 10 e lode” (“Top of the class teachers”) initiative consists of a free weekend trip to an Italian city of art for teachers and school administrators who provide outstanding support to students during the preparation of their projects and who have contributed to promoting the Foundation’s work.

Publitalia '80 Master in Marketing, Communication and Sales Management

Sisal supports the Master’s Degree in Marketing, Communication and Sales Management offered by Publitalia ‘80. The course is addressed to graduates who wish to build a career in the fields of marketing, trade marketing, sales and communication.

Sisal’s contribution to this initiative includes seminars, workshops and reports on labour market trends, which offer the opportunity to update the training program on a regular basis. In this way, the Master in Marketing, Communication and Sales Management always acts as an “up-to-date” bridge between universities and the world of business.

The main teaching goals are to develop “specialist” skills, strategic thinking and international vision, to build a sense of responsibility, to instill a spirit of initiative and to be able to make decisions in risk situations and competitive environments.

Save the Children

From 2009 to 2013, Sisal worked in a profitable partnership with Save the Children on multiple fronts.

Save the Children, an organisation established in 1919 with a presence in more than 120 countries worldwide, has been committed from the outset to protecting children’s rights and provides a response to emergencies through initiatives in the areas of education, health, poverty and exploitation.

Sisal and Save the Children first began working together at the time of the Abruzzo earthquake emergency with the creation of “Children’s Areas”, and then continued in subsequent years with projects addressed to fighting and reducing the serious school dropout problem in Italy, by promoting the idea of a social change that considers education as the primary source of growth and development for the future of new generations.

The projects promoted by Sisal:
  • "In-Contro" (“En-Counter”) pilot project, Rome 2010-2011
  • "W la Scuola" (“Long Live School”) project, Naples 2011-2012
  • "A più voci contro la dispersione scolastica" (“Voices against school dropout”) project, Milan 2012- 2013
aim to support and improve the learning process and the educational achievements of young people, motivating them and facilitating their active contribution to identifying the causes of the school dropout problem and to proposing solutions.
The innovative peer-to-peer approach adopted has optimised the effectiveness of the initiative, making young people themselves its protagonists and the promoters of how important school is with their fellow students.

Art and Culture

Piccolo Teatro di Milano

Since 2009, Sisal has been working in close partnership with Piccolo Teatro di Milano - Teatro d'Europa.
Our shared goals are to educate young people to appreciate art and culture, in order to promote values that contribute to personal growth and support the socialising function of art, by offering the public an open air meeting point in the form of the magnificent Chiostro Nina Vinchi in Via Rovello in Milan, for which Sisal is Special Partner.
Five years after its opening, the Chiostro del Bramante has become an important social meeting place and a centre of cultural excellence in Milan. It hosts meetings, workshops and seminars organised as part of the teaching programmes of the main universities in Milan, numerous courses associated with the world of art and culture organised on a joint basis with foreign universities and international language institutes, and artistic activities ranging from public readings to edutainment events organised jointly with various European theatres.

Art For Business

Since 2007, the Art For Business Association has been promoting the contribution made by the arts to the world of business and is committed to the development and experimentation of training methods that draw on artistic practice to examine specific issues relating to business organisation.
Art For Business is committed to entering into a conversation with companies through the definition and implementation of projects that underscore the role played by artistic experience as an authentic opportunity for growth and training.
From 2011 to 2013, Sisal sponsored the Art For Business Forum, an event organised jointly with the Triennale di Milano to encourage interaction and dialogue between the worlds of art and business as a way to promote innovation.
Subsequently the partnership with the Association evolved into the "Art for Business Mentorship" project: a six-month initiative in which two artistic talents develop their own personal creative processes, drawing on the support and experience of two successful professionals.

Not only a creative path, but also an opportunity for two generations to exchange ideas, contributing to the growth of the people involved and their professional skills.
The selected artists, Elisabetta Falanga e Michela de Carlo, were mentored by Marco Ghezzi and Paolo Rosa to exploit their ideas to the full and give shape and substance to their projects.

Michela developed the project concept “Energia Primaria”, an installation that involves the projection of the three-dimensional image of a block of marble sculpted firsthand by visitors during the brief exhibition period. An experience that unites the creative energy of the individual with the surrounding environment.

In “L’altro livello della Terra” (“The Other Level of the Earth”) Elisabetta, whose artistic development has led to her discovery of man as a landscape shaped through encounters and experiences, has focused on the relationship between illness and the body, reinterpreted through a slow metamorphosis.

Casa Testori Cultural Association

The main interest of the Casa Testori Association is the conservation and promotion of the house in Novate Milanese where Giovanni Testori was born. For this reason the Association works constantly to create initiatives that keep the space open to the public, transforming it into a meeting point and a centre of local cultural production.
Sisal supported the “Giorni Felici a Casa Testori 2014” (“Happy Days in the Testori Home 2014”) exhibition which, from May 29 to July 13, welcomed new talents and successful artists to Casa Testori, offering them the opportunity to interpret and promote all the spaces in this evocative residence through their own personal expressive languages, giving life to an unusual experience of artistic co-habitation and exchange.
Giorni Felici therefore also represents an opportunity for young people who are setting out on their careers as artists to gain visibility through a constructive relationship with the great masters, and in fact Elisabetta Falanga’s work “L’altro livello della terra” was exhibited here. In it, a room is split in half by a sheet of glass, with a ground section at the top and underground section beneath it, in which the light filtering through from above creates plays of light.

Palazzo Marino in Musica

Sisal supports the Palazzo Marino in Musica initiative sponsored by the Municipality of Milan and organised on a joint basis with the G. Verdi Conservatory to promote culture through musical events and book and poetry readings.
In 2013 the festival, organised by the Equivoci Musicali Association and with the art direction of Ettore Napoli and Davide Santi, involved some of the city’s most important cultural institutions, including the Fondazione delle Scuole Civiche di Milano (Milan Foundation of Civic Schools), the Conservatorio “G. Verdi” di Milano (Milan Conservatory) and the Amadeus Foundation, all of which share the aim of promoting the city’s best young artistic talents.
The concerts were organised on weekends in February and March 2013.

Sport

Io tifo positivo

Since 2011, Sisal has been supporting “Io tifo positivo” (‘I’m a positive fan’), the project which springs from the longstanding experience in sports and education of the Comunità Nuova non-profit organisation.
The Comunità Nuova non-profit organisation is convinced that every young person should have the opportunity to imagine their future and that to develop their capabilities they have to discover and test them through a series of suitable instruments. The organisation has a presence in numerous neighbourhoods, particularly in Lombardy, providing facilities that many young people would otherwise not have access to: places in which to meet, people to talk to, entertainment, computers, rehearsal rooms, musical and sporting events, educational support, but also professional and entrepreneurial training.

“Io tifo Positivo” was created and has developed to teach young people to respect each other and be tolerant, to propose sporting values as the guiding principles that underpin human relations, to promote a sustainable model of being a sport fan and to restrict the sport fan phenomenon to sporting venues and during events.

Young people of ages 9 to 13 are offered an educational programme organised to encourage a better awareness of the issue and the benefits of the decisions they will be called on to make as adults and future fans.
The project involves classroom work, meetings with testimonials, play activities and the attendance of sporting events.

In the 2012-2013 school year, the project involved 83 new classes and groups or a total of 2,500 students, plus school administrators and over 100 teachers, coaches and parents, in the municipalities and provinces of Milan, Pavia, Monza, Brianza, Bergamo, Brescia and Catania.
It was also decided to involve parents to a greater extent, with a view to sharing the project’s goals.
There were numerous events, sports meetings and special occasions, like the World Anti-Racism Day, in which all family members took part.

In 2013, the project’s development extended into Europe through the ELYS (Educational LABs for European Young Supporters) and PRO US ALL (Promoting Urban Sport for All) initiatives, of which Sisal has decided to become a Partner, organised in collaboration with CONI Lombardia and other Italian and European partners. These international cooperation projects have provided the opportunity to share good practices in sport education.

CUS Verona Rugby

Sisal has been supporting the CUS Verona Rugby first team through its Win for Life brand since the 2009/10 season.
This partnership forms part of a broader university training support scheme involving the provision of study grants for the most deserving students. Sisal’s initiative focuses in particular on the young athletes who receive no support from their own families and must pay for their education themselves, and who demonstrate through their behaviour and actions that they respect the values on which this sport is based: personal commitment, responsibility, high personal and ethical standards, a spirit of sharing and participation, and the desire to overcome difficulties.

A.S.D. "I  Briganti di Librino"

In 2014, Sisal is offering its support to the “I Briganti di Librino” Association, with a project that works to fight unlawfulness through the sport of rugby.
The project involves activities for young people aged 14 to 18 who live in the densely populated neighbourhood of Librino, on the outskirts of Catania, where there is the constant risk of coming into contact with organised crime.

The goals of the “I Briganti di Librino” Association, which was established in 2006 in the neighbourhood of the same name, are: to improve the relationship between residents and the local area; to provide alternative opportunities to social groups at serious risk; and to promote the principles of sport to organise socialisation and cultural awareness programmes.
To do so it introduces young people who live in popular residential districts, including Librino, to sport; encourages the use of abandoned local sports facilities; promotes the social and cultural role played by the sport of rugby; and fights the scourge of child labour to guarantee respect for children’s rights.

Fund Raising

Telethon

Since 2005, Sisal has been the Technical Partner of Telethon for the annual TV Marathon broadcast by the Rai television network, a fundraising event for biomedical research into curing rare genetic diseases.

During the annual Telethon, donations can be made using SuperEnalotto game cards in Sisal betting shops. Donations can also be made without playing.

Since 1990, Telethon has been investing in world-class research to find a cure for rare genetic illnesses and developing partnerships with public healthcare institutes and the pharmaceuticals industry, with the aim of translating the results of research into drugs available for all patients throughout the world.

The funds raised by Sisal support two important research projects: “Evaluation of an approach to genetic therapy with stem cells for the treatment of Hurler syndrome”, coordinated by researcher Marta Seraini at the San Gerardo Hospital Pediatric Clinic - M. Tettamanti Foundation, Milan Bicocca University, and “Role of epigenetic factors in the identity of stem cells and in tissue regeneration processes”, coordinated by researcher Davide Corona at the Biochemistry Unit of Palermo University’s Cellular Biology and Development Department.

A.I.R.C.

For over ten years now, Sisal has been supporting the National Cancer Research Day organised by the AIRC (Associazione Italiana per la Ricerca sul Cancro - Italian Association for Cancer Research) by making its sales network available to the association to raise funds through both free and game-related donations.
The AIRC has been working since 1965 to finance research projects conducted by university laboratories, hospitals and scientific institutes, to improve the knowledge of young researchers through special programmes, and to raise the awareness of and inform the public about the progress made in cancer research.
The funds raised are donated to cancer research by means of a selection and supervision process strictly based on merit and transparency. Research and grant projects are assessed in a rigorously professional framework by the Association’s scientific management team of technical and scientific experts.
In 2014, Sisal and AIRC decided to launch the fundraising campaign in May to coincide with the “Azalea per la Ricerca” (“An Azalea for Research”) street initiative.

Umberto Veronesi Foundation

Sisal has been supporting the Umberto Veronesi Foundation since 2012, by raising funds to finance research into breast cancer.
For the last ten years, Fondazione Umberto Veronesi has been investing energy and funds to support scientific research. It works with leading academics on important initiatives to support innovative projects and offers research scholarships to young doctors and scientists.
Research areas include oncology, neuroscience, cardiology and, in particular, prevention-related initiatives.

There is a special focus on breast cancer, the most common tumor among women (one woman in ten according to statistics). Early diagnosis and new therapies have proven to be very effective. Indeed, out of the 37,000 Italian women diagnosed every year, 87% recover, one of the highest rates in the world.

The funds raised by the 2013 campaign have been donated to the “Biomarkers for women at risk of breast cancer” research project, coordinated by Professor Bernardo Bonanni of the IEO (Istituto Europeo Oncologia - European Cancer Institute) in Milan, which has the goal of offering the carriers of BRCA1 and BRCA3 gene mutations (i.e. the women who are most at risk, even at a young age) effective new early diagnosis tools which, when used in conjunction with the techniques available at present, help to reduce still further the mortality rate from breast cancer.

AriSLA - Italian Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis Research Foundation

Since 2012, Sisal has been working with AriSLA to support scientific research into amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.
AriSLA, the Italian Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis Research Foundation, is the leading agency dealing with the promotion, financing and coordination of scientific research on amyotrophic lateral sclerosis in Italy and in Europe.
It was established in December 2008 by AISLA, the Italian Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis Association (a non-profit organisation), Fondazione Cariplo, Fondazione Telethon and Fondazione Vialli e Mauro per la Ricerca e lo Sport (a non-profit organisation). Its mission is to make investments and opportunities for research into amyotrophic lateral sclerosis more effective and efficient, by coordinating projects and researchers and by supporting the rapid transfer of results to clinical practice.
The Foundation’s research activities are carried on alongside fundraising work, conducted with the help of the Fondazione Vialli e Mauro, with the goal of adding to the annual endowment fund provided by the Founding Partners: for this purpose SriSLA develops synergy and partnerships with third party entities to provide support for scientific research and to raise awareness about the issues associated with the illness.

Vialli and Mauro Non-Profit Foundazion For Research and Sport

Since 2014 Sisal has been supporting the Vialli and Mauro Non-Profit Foundation for Research and Sport.

The Foundation was set up in Turin in 2003 and works primarily to raise funds for medical and scientific research into Cancer and Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS).
The Foundation’s secondary goal is cultural: to diffuse the values of sport as a social, cultural and educational phenomenon and promote its ideals of peace, brotherhood and honesty.
Sport, music and culture provide the backdrop for important events organised to rally together diverse realities to work towards the same goal.
The funds raised through the Sisal point of sale network in June and July 2014 have been used to finance a neurology research grant on ALS at the Turin University Faculty of Medicine and Surgery.

Save The Children

From 2011 to 2013, Sisal supported the Every One campaign organised by Save the Children, by making its Distribution Network available to raise funds and producing special promotional campaigns to raise awareness about the initiative.

Since 2009, Save the Children has been promoting the Every One global campaign addressed to reducing infant mortality and providing healthcare and assistance for mothers and children in 38 countries.
Every year about 6 million children in the world die before they reach their 5th birthday as a result of causes which can easily be prevented and cured, such as measles, diarrhea, pneumonia and neonatal complications.
Save the Children uses the funds it raises to develop mother/infant healthcare projects and reaches out to over 50 million children and women in reproductive age, ensuring that they have food, care and assistance.

Other initiatives

Make-A-Wish®

Since 2009, Sisal has been supporting Make-A-Wish® Italy, an association with a mission to make the dreams of seriously ill children come true and bring a little joy, hope and strength into their lives.
For a seriously ill child, making a wish come true sustains the dream that nothing is impossible, giving them the strength to carry on their struggle and forget their illness, so that they can concentrate on simply being a child.
Make-A-Wish® Italy was established in 2004 as a tribute to the memory of Carlotta Frontani, a very special girl who died after a serious illness in November 2002 at the age of 10.
Sisal supports Make-A-Wish® not only by providing funds, but also by making resources available to fulfill children’s wishes, not least by transferring unassigned prizes in certain games to the Association.

Fiabaday

Since 2009, with its SuperEnalotto brand, Sisal has been supporting the “National Fiabaday to reduce physical and cultural barriers”, working alongside the non-profit Fiaba Association, which is active in the implementation of policies to reduce physical and cultural barriers for the disabled.
Fiabaday awareness campaigns, which are sponsored by the President of the Italian Republic and organised jointly with the Italian Prime Minister’s Office, involve initiatives throughout Italy to inform and involve citizens and to promote a debate on the need for spaces that are accessible to and can be enjoyed by everyone.

Rimini Meeting

Since 2004, Sisal has been attending the annual Rimini meeting, an important event that brings together citizens, the institutions and prominent figures from the world of business and culture.
Sisal also takes a booth to the meeting, devoted entirely to play activities for the youngest visitors, which over the years has grown into a huge 250 sq m play area known as the “SuperEnalotto Sisal Fun Village”.
In it, numerous creative and artistic activities are organised to stimulate the imagination and communicate the message that play must be an enjoyable social activity.

San Matteo General Hospital in Pavia

In 2013, Sisal supported the “Aladin’s Lamp” project organised by the Pediatric Surgery department at San Matteo General Hospital in Pavia, with the aim of adapting the department’s patient space to meet the needs of children.

San Matteo General Hospital is one of Europe’s leading research hospitals. It is also a clinical experimentation workshop and has been providing assistance since the 15th century.

The project, supported by the “Beyond therapy for children who have undergone surgery” Committee, has demonstrated that it is an important example of public/private collaboration, showing that synergy between two very different environments like these can create useful interactions that promote Social Sustainability.
The Committee, made up of volunteers and the parents and relatives of the children in care, looks at children as a whole to ensure that care is not limited to medical and surgical therapy but becomes a cultural approach to accepting the condition of children with illnesses and the suffering of their parents.

Sisal Group completed work on the project in just 4 months (from August to December 2013), adapting all 11 rooms in the Pediatric Surgery department to meet the needs of child patients.
New beds and lockers, comfortable armchairs, pastel coloured walls and bright, welcoming decorations have transformed a space where young patients often have to spend long periods of care and isolation: an extremely important project addressed to improving the environment in which child patients spend their time and ensuring that the hospital’s specialists can offer the best possible treatment and care.

Laboratorio 0246

In 2013, Sisal supported the “Laboratorio 0246” Association’s Parco Primo Sport 0246 project to renew the playground next to the sports facility in Viale Tiziano in Rome, which covers an area of about 1,900 square meters.
The new park contains various games laid out to form motor pathways designed to develop the manuality, mobility and balance of children in the 0-6 year old age range. The playground layout was designed by a group at the University of Verona, on a joint basis with CONI, the project’s main supporter.
The “Laboratorio 0246” Social Promotion Association has a mission to support children’s growth right from their first steps and to develop their sensory-motor abilities, as well as to create ideal conditions to encourage socialisation.

Dora and Pajtimit Association

In 2013, Sisal launched a process to reorganise all the sponsorship and event material it had accumulated over the years.
After cataloguing all these materials (pencils, pens, calculators, hats, t-shirts, frisbees, etc.), the company decided to make them available to small organisations for alternative uses. Out of this initiative sprang the collaboration with the Dora and Pajtimit Association: the material recovered was donated to the Association and sent to Albania.

Dora and Pajtimit is an Italo-Albanian non-profit Association set up in 2007, with offices in Milan and Scuatari and a mission to take action in areas with serious social problems, using techniques and tools that draw their inspiration on social theatre and sharing fundamental knowledge and skills to restore the confidence, awareness and desire of local communities to improve. Peaceful co-habitation is an indispensable condition for healthy personal development and social and relational abilities. In cases where trauma and hardship have resulted in closure and isolation, the adoption of new models of interpreting reality encourages understanding, open-mindedness towards others and, most importantly, the achievement of one’s own sense of balance and well-being.

Vogue's Game

In September 2013, to coincide with Vogue Fashion’s Night Out initiatives in Florence and Milan, the Vogue’s Game quiz about the world of fashion was created by the magazine Vogue jointly with Sisal.
On October 1, 2013, Vogue’s Game became a prize contest with the aim of supporting the talent of participants in the competition.

The contest was split into three categories with different prizes:

  • Education: three EUR 5,000 study grants for post diploma or master courses
  • Creation: three EUR 10,000 prizes for a project associated with the professional environment in fashion, art, photography, music, literature and journalism
  • Shopping: three EUR 2,500 vouchers to spend in boutiques in Florence, Milan and Rome, accompanied by a Vogue personal shopper.

A total of 4,000 competitors took part in Vogue’s Game powered by Win for Life, challenging each other’s skill, knowledge and speed for three months on the subjects of style, fashion, lifestyle and society.

Respect for the Environment

Environmental concerns are an essential aspect of the company’s Corporate Social Responsib
ility program.
Sisal demonstrates its commitment to protecting the environment through a number of specific projects, all of which share the common goal of reducing pollution and waste.
The company’s employees and associates are encouraged to behave responsibly and use natural resources in a balanced way.
Sisal’s environmental commitment can be divided into the following areas:
  • Recycling
  • Energy savings
  • Reduction of consumption
  • Environmental impact reduction

Environmental Impact Reduction

FSC® Certification

Since July 2010, the Sisal Logistics Division has been reviewing its suppliers to select the ones who not only offer good quality and competitive pricing, but also have a heightened awareness of environmental issues. At the present time, all the Division’s suppliers of gaming materials are certified by the FSC® (Forest Stewardship Council).
The FSC® trademark certifies that paper has been sourced from forests managed in a correct and responsible manner, in accordance with strict environmental, social and economic standards. Since 2012, the wording “Environment and health friendly paper” has been printed on the back of all rolls of thermal paper distributed by Sisal, in addition to the FSC® logo, to acknowledge the company’s commitment to the Environment.
FSC® is an international, independent, non-profit NGO which organises numerous activities, including the definition of standards for sound forestry management, in accordance with FSC® International principles and criteria adapted for forests in Italy, and the promotion of studies and pilot projects in connection with sustainable forestry management, certification and the market for certified forestry products.

Consumption Reduction

Sisal’s environmental initiatives and activities to save energy and reduce consumption include:

  • the use of electric cars: Sisal has four electric cars for staff to use when travelling on business inside Milan and Rome. These cars do not pollute and their use is authorised even during traffic bans. The electric cars are used by employees for short journeys and everyday service needs, as well as by maintenance engineers when performing work in restricted traffic areas in Milan and Rome;
  • elimination of plastic bags for retail network distribution: another component of Sisal’s drive to safeguard the environment is its decision to deliver gaming materials to retailers without using plastic bags. This will entail an additional effort on the part of the Logistics Division in terms of materials monitoring and distribution;
  • optimisation of logistics processes: Sisal has reviewed and reorganised its logistics processes to optimize shipments and eliminate excess consumption in connection with materials delivery and collection. The review process saw a significant number of potential suppliers involved and led to the establishment of a number of new partnerships.
The reorganisation of the company’s logistics processes, which began in 2011, reduced annual atmospheric CO2 emissions generated by transport activities by 525,55 tonnes compared with 2010. The optimisation process in 2012 and 2013 has led to a further reduction of 75 tonnes;

Stock Store program: the Stock Store program is used to manage and monitor stock levels and reorder materials for retailers. It also provides paper consumption monitoring and reminders to encourage responsible use.

“100% Energia Pulita” (‘100% Clean Energy’) Certification

Sisal is committed to using only energy from renewable sources. This commitment was recognised in 2012 in the form of the “100% Clean Energy” certificate issued by its supplier, Energetic Source, which confirms that the energy consumed by the company is produced entirely from renewable sources.
Sisal’s Logistics Division also launched a project to invite all its suppliers to use only renewable energy.

Selection of a sustainable Supplier to manage catering services: Fri70, the company contracted to manage Sisal’s catering services, adopts various virtuous practices to protect the environment: the installation of a system of photovoltaic modules to generate the energy used by offices and warehouses; the collection of rainwater for use by the company; the use of vehicles and vans powered by natural gas (Euro 5); the selection of automatic vending machines featuring low energy consumption and CO2 emissions.
Fri70 has obtained environmental certification based on the UNI EN ISO 14001 standard.

Environmental Impact Reduction

Recycling

Disposing of waste correctly is one of the main areas in which the company and its employees demonstrate their commitment to the environment. Containers have been positioned in all eating areas and near printers for waste glass, plastic, aluminium and paper to recycle. The Rome office, in a joint initiative with waste collection operator AMA S.p.A., has organised special training sessions for staff and the company’s office cleaners. AMA S.p.A. has also provided the company with “ecoboxes”, which have been installed according to the instructions received.
There have been significant levels of cooperation and engagement with the people involved and Sisal staff have shown great awareness of the importance of recycling.

Energy saving

Slogans including “More attention - Less illumination” are used to remind staff about some of the small daily gestures they can perform before leaving the office, starting with turning off all electronic devices and the lights in their offices. Office cleaning and reception desk staff have also contributed to preventing wastage by switching off lights in offices and communal areas at the end of the working day.

Reducing consumption

With a view to avoiding unnecessary printing, the company has introduced an internal management system for the multi-function printers used to make photocopies and to scan and print documents.

All documents are sent to a central server for printing, which is performed only when members of staff enter their credentials directly on the printer keypad. If these credentials are not entered in the space of a few hours, the relative jobs are automatically deleted from the print queue on the server.

A paper document delocalization campaign (for invoices and waybills) has also been launched to optimise consultation and avoid unnecessary copies.

Reduced consumption of thermal paper

A re-organisation of logistics flows and careful management of shipments to points of sale have significantly reduced our consumption of rolls of thermal paper, used by the Extrema, Leonardo, Microlot and Xpos gaming terminals.
The consolidation of these processes in 2013 has generated further savings  of 141,755,242 meters, or 689,558 rolls of paper compared with 2010. In addition, Sisal has chosen to work only with suppliers of thermal paper who guarantee that their production processes are completely bisphenol free (of bisphenol A, in particular).
The Sisal Network continues its efforts to reduce paper consumption at points of sale by reducing the weight of its Gioca Facile game cards.
In 2013 this initiative saved a total of about 22 tonnes of paper annually and it is hoped that this figure will be maintained in coming years.

Emilio Petrone: Values of Sustainability

2013 was an important year for Sisal’s Social Responsibility Programme. We defined a new Vision and new Guiding Values which, consistently with the company’s historical identity, put people and lasting sustainability at the center of our actions.

The new Charter of Values was prepared through an enterprise-wide process involving the entire company, and we launched the “VIS - Values in Sisal” programme in order to implement the reference values in practice. We believe that these values must be shared with conviction if they are to generate real world behaviours and actions by the people who work in the company.

Teamwork, care of and respect for consumers, the value of people and their diversity, research into innovation, striving for excellence and responsibility: these are the values that guide and inspire our strategies.

The new values and the new vision - “Making people’s lives easier and more enjoyable” - are in fact rooted in the history of Sisal, which right from the outset in 1946 has always strived to combine economic growth with the solid principles of Social Responsibility.

Therefore, over the last 70 years of its history, the company has grown hand-in-hand with its commitment to acting responsibly, and since 2009 we have drawn up a structured Sustainability Programme that subscribes to the logic of creating shared value, with a view to producing both benefits for the company and for all its stakeholders.

We are convinced that the ability to generate business results is also the product of good practice in stakeholder relations, and particularly of a constructive relationship with the institutions and with partners, a caring approach to customers, the recognition of the full value of employees, respect for the environment, and the ability to contribute constructively to the well-being of the community as a whole.

The first concern of our Sustainability Programme was the introduction of a Responsible Gaming model to protect our customers as a whole and the most vulnerable among them in particular. And in fact our international certification by European Lotteries and the World Lottery Association has been renewed at the maximum level in the Responsible Gaming area. The new certifications, first obtained in 2011, have been extended for the first time in 2014 to the entire gaming offering and represent a recognition of our rigorous and constant commitment to promoting a culture of legal, aware and balanced gaming.

Our commitment to the community is another important aspect of Social Responsibility for Sisal. In the areas of education and culture, in 2013 we supported projects addressed to young people, with the goal of creating development and training opportunities. We also renewed our support for scientific research through the promotion of fundraising initiatives in which our point of sale network has been used by important partners, including AIRC, AriSLA, Telethon and the Umberto Veronesi Foundation.

We are also aware that today Corporate Responsibility plays an increasingly important strategic role in the growth of local communities and we are developing a programme of local initiatives to promote social innovation pathways that provide a response to citizens’ needs through new collaboration solutions between businesses and local entities.

Turning to internal stakeholders, collaborators and employees, in 2013 we continued to invest in building a working environment that offers everyone the same opportunities based on shared parameters of merit and that recognises talents and the richness of diversity, engaging with multi-functional working teams to identify and implement action plans, as is the case of the WiSe Team (Women in Sisal Experience) and the WoW Team (Working on Work).

The 2013 Social Report, the fifth edition of this document, bears witness to Sisal’s ongoing commitment to adding new value to sustainability principles. This commitment forms an integral part of the corporate strategy and regards retail development, diversification of the offering, innovation and digital presence as the main business drivers.

To accelerate this growth, in 2014 Sisal launched the stock market listing project, which it had to cancel due to unfavorable international financial market conditions. But the company has no intention of cancelling its strong determination to continue to consolidate a strategy of sustainable growth which, by combining business development and enterprise responsibility, can create shared value for all our stakeholders.
